I'd just like to point out that I'm a long-time Mac user and have no need for the default home/end key actions: jump to the beginning of the document, but leave the cursor where it was. It just makes no sense to me. I use KeyRemap4MacBook to map these to start/end of line, which are much more common actions, in my opinion.

I have a DeskJet 970c with a duplex component. With Leopard the duplex function ceased to function, and continues to fail. As you noted, HP is no help. Gutenprint and Foomatic do not provide the duplex function. I resent the attempt to force me to throw away a good printer. It is ecologically, and economically (at least from my point of view) unsound. I will never purchase an HP product again. What brand(s) does the readership recommend? Or - does anyone have a solution?

Fantastic article - thank you. A few notes to contribute: 1) New volumes are not automatically indexed by Spotlight which will break the ability to search "Entire Message" within Mail. Run the following to enable indexing: sudo mdutil -i on "/Volumes/PRIVATE" 2) I once used Filevault and was excited to do a restore via my Time Capsule when I bought my new MBP. Turns out this is (or was not) supported by Apple. At least one of their technicians was told me how to open up the backed up image so that I could extract my files. Empty the Safari Cache Quit Safari In Finder, Navigate to ~/Library � Preferences � Macromedia � Flash Player and delete the 2 folders in this folder. Re-start Safari.

Here's an easier solution (for me at least). 1. Put SD memory card in printer slot. 2. Press Scan button on all-in-one. 3. Select SD card as save destination 4. Press OK. 5. Wait until SD card appears on Mac desktop and drag scan file to desktop 6. REMEMBER to NEVER buy another HP all-in-one after HP cynically made older models obsolescent!

...oh and also map home to Ctrl-A and end to Ctrl-E specifically for the terminal app and you have it working there too. Butler is able to set the keystrokes on a per-app basis.

Hey, My first problem here: I tried this hint (1.25ghz PB G4 with 10.5.8) and now I'm getting Safari quits....I went back to the Adobe site and change the allowable amount to be 'held' back to 100mb. Not sure thats what it originally was; now it asks for 'permission ' on every 'flash' (when Safari doesn't quit'). Any suggestions????? Tony? Thanks in advance.

By default, the buttons on a Wacom tablet pull up Expos�. I developed muscle memory double-tapping the current-app-Expos� button with my pen if I needed to pull up a window. It was pretty rad. Here's how I recreated it: - As Geobunny suggests, I mapped "Bring All to Front" to a keystroke. I chose F9, as it seems to have no other function in the apps I use. - In the Pen Tablet control panel, I remapped the button to "F9 F3." It was previously just F3. Now, double-tapping the button brings all the windows to the front in apps that have that menu item, which most do. AIR and Cocoa apps both seem to include it by default - the only apps I have that don't expose this menu item are the Adobe ones.

The only thing actually necessary in all of that is to unload the ddservice64d launchctl service. Use the -w option to ensure it remains disabled over reboots.


sudo launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.datarobotics.ddservice64d.plist

Having the other files on disk doesn't much matter, and the uninstaller will remove them if/when you uninstall the Drobo Dashboard software.

I installed the BetterPrivacy add-on to Firefox and have tested it for a couple of weeks (frequently quitting Firefox, etc.) It does reliably clean out the #SharedObjects folder you mentioned. However, when I use the Flash cookie manager, I still see a huge list of cookies, some clearly from a while ago. Clearly I am doing something wrong, but I don't know what.

I don't think that PowerPC/Intel makes any difference. When the 10.6.2 update stopped my HP 2600n LaserJet working (all colors print as solid black), I just re-installed the old drivers from HP and was back in business. I don't have Rosetta installed, and the drivers I installed (from 2007) are universal binaries.

I noticed that Flash was storing some sites that I went to while "Private Browsing" in Safari. It seems that Adobe's default setting invade that privacy. Thanks for the tip.

I found that unchecking/rechecking the update time automatically didn't seem to always work for me. Also, killing the ntpd task didn't seem effective either. But through googling, I found that sudo SystemStarter -d restart "Network Time" in terminal seems to reset the time immediately. (I needed this because my battery in this computer has quit and I haven't replaced it yet.) HTH

I had Leopard and Boot Camp installed on a single drive in my MacBook. I replaced the drive with a 250GB HD and wanted to create 2 bootable OSX partitions and keep my Boot Camp partition. I did the following (using a combination of comments here): 1) Cloned my original OSX partition with SuperDuper. 2) Clone the Boot Camp partition with WinClone. 3) Formatted the new drive with Disk Utility (1 partition). 4) Restored OSX with SuperDuper. 5) Used the Boot Camp Assistant to only create the Windows partition then quit. ***Didnt do this as i was starting from fresh*** 6) Restored my old Boot Camp partition with WinClone. *** Ignored 6*** 7) Used Disk Utility ***from cd*** to resize the Leopard partition. Then created a new MacOS Extended (Journaled) partition with the new free space. 8) My Boot Camp partition failed to load with a blue screen and "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME". ***(mine actually went into a constant restart loop)*** 9) Installed MacFuse and NTFS_3G. ***(I didnt do this as i was happy for my 3rd partition to be fat32*** 10) Opened the boot.ini file on the Boot Camp partition within OSX using TextWrangler. Changed the 3's to 4's. (Used Disk Utility to find out the new partition # assigned to Boot Camp after I created the new OSX partition). 11) Rebooted into Boot Camp and it worked! [ Reply to This | # ] 10.5: Create a third NTFS partition with Boot Camp Authored by: chazsconi on Fri, Jun 13 2008 at 11:06AM PDT Thankyou PWB for these simplified instructions. However I wanted my extra partition to be NTFS, which with MacFuse and NTFS_3G will be accessible from Leopard and XP. To do this I did the following: 1. Followed all of PWB's instructions to step 11. 2. Checked XP still booted. 3. Went back into OSX and used Disk Utility to format the new partition with NTFS instead of MacOS extended. (This option is available if you have got MacFuse/NTFS_3G installed) 4. Step 3 will report an error due to a permissions problem 5. Go to the terminal 6. Change the ownership of the disk: sudo chown user_id:operator /dev/disk0s3 Replace user_id with your logged on user id. 7. Re-do step 3 in Disk Utility which should now succeed. Change the ownership back to root: sudo chown user_id:operator /dev/disk0s3 8. Done. You should now have 3 partitions: MacOS with Leopard; NTFS with XP installed and between the two an new empty NTFS partition The only minor problem I have found with this is that within Leopard if I go to start-up disk within settings it cannot see the XP partition, so I can not reboot to XP from within Leopard. I have to reboot, hold down the Option key at startup and then select Windows from the menu manually. Something else I have learnt from this exercise, which involved an lot of trial-and-error and rebooting, is that it's not a good idea to create or change any partitions from within Windows using the Disk Management snap-in in Computer Management. This either fails, results in partitions that OSX cannot see, or causes Windows to fail to boot once the partitions are created. It may be possible to do this successfully using the extended options available from the command line in Windows, but I didn't try this. In summary only use OSX to mess around with the partitions. ******************************************************* FOR 10.4 i found that the same procedure didnt work. I had to change the system clock to allow bootcamp to work as it was a beta (try 07.06.07) Then used bootcamp as normal and setup windows (i had done this back in 2007 but used NTFS as windows and wanted to reduce the size) Once windows was installed I used a 10.5 install disc 1 to access the disc utility. i was then able to do the same steps as before from steps 7 of PWB's post I now have an XP (Fat 32) SERVICE (FAT 32) and Macintosh HD (Macintosh Journaled) Partitions on 10.4 and 10.5 OSX This means i can now save a norton ghost image of windows to the service drive, when i want to reinstall windows i can boot from the ghost boot CD and recover the XP image from the service drive.

I'm not sure if the problem is really the "Smartmount" functionality. If you see the two drives on both Mac and Windows, the device is acutally not connected to Windows. Going into "Devices" -> "USB" -> "whateverthenameis" you sould be able to connect the USB device DIRECTLY to the VM, the two drives should disappear under Mac and should appear ONLY within Windows.

This certainly would break code signing, but luckily, it's pretty easy to re-sign an app yourself:

Here is how you re-sign any app (although this is not really a hint because it is plainly documented, maybe we should post it as such, considering the number of hints that involve modifying application packages):

It is simply a two-step process..
First, you need to create a Code Signing certificate in Keychain Access.
To do so, open Keychain Access, then from the Keychain Access menu, select Certificate Assistant --> Create a Certificate...
In the Name field enter your desired CertificateName (try to make it unique to avoid stepping on the toes of a real certificate), and in the Certificate Type menu, select Code Signing
Hit continue, and you're done with that part

This trick is useful if you want to use LiveUpdate, but there's no reason to do so. My Navigon has a flash card (SD) and all I have to do is take it and put it in my card reader � once the software is downloaded (new software and new maps) you simply unzip it and write it to the card. Navigon has instructions on how to do so right on their site. I just wish they'd make new devices for the US market, but I'm thinking of trying the iPhone software.

Is it possible you just haven't noticed? This may seem weird, but if you use Safari as your browser and don't restart your system a lot, it would be easy to overlook, or not make the proper mental link when you do find a file association that seems to have reverted. It took me about two months to fully figure out what was going on and to trace it to FileVault.
